([personal profile] duckprintspress Jul. 9th, 2025 08:22 am)

I left on a family vacation yesterday, flying coast-to-coast US (now on West Coast) with my family, so I read a lot - first in the week leading up to the trip, cause I had a bunch of physical library books I wanted to return, and then of course during the flights and layover. Anyway.

1. What are you currently reading?

I'm about halfway through Babel by R. F. Kuang. I still am enjoying it but the tension is building in a way that's making me slow down - I don't want to keep turning pages to reach the point where everything falls apart, sigh. I also started vol 4 of the TGCF manhua in Chinese but didn't bother bringing it on my trip so it's on hold til we're home.

2. What have you recently finish reading?

so much manga. so fuckin' much. and a lil non-manga graphic novel reading too.

  • Rainbow! vol. 2 by Sunny: there was nothing objectively wrong with this (modern wlw), except a total mismatch between the title and cover art and the actual themes. It's presented as happy fluff but is in fact heavy family angst with a happy ending and I just can't wrap my head around it. It's a duology, at least, so this was the end.
  • XXXHolic omnibus vol. 3 by CLAMP
  • Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! vol. 13 by Yuu Toyota: I hope this is ending soon, I've enjoyed it but the author really seems to have run out of things to say.
  • What Did You Eat Yesterday? vol. 2 and 3 by Fumi Yoshinaga: I don't think I'll be continuing with this. The food parts are entirely uninteresting to me - I just skipped them - but more than that, the mc is really kinda a jerk. Being told he's repeatedly settling by being with his boyfriend is such a yawn fest. Why would I read slice of life food blog stuff about a couple who hardly seem to like each other?
  • 天官赐福 manhua vol. 3 by 墨香铜臭: I didn't quite manage three volumes in Chinese in two months but at least I finished this one early in the month?
  • Moriarty the Patriot vol. 9 - 19 by Ryosuke Takeuchi: (SPOILERS) Sherlock/Moriarty is so canon that another character called out a conversation they had as them exchanging marriage vows so uh. there's that I guess. I was reading it with my wife next to me and I was like, "look at these two idiots these are basically marriage vows" and then I turned the page and on the next page was a character who'd over heard them going "look at you two idiots these are basically marriage vows.".(/END SPOILERS) I keep staring at it in Storygraph like. do I tag this mlm or not???? anyway, 19 is the last volume - I've finished the series. I have mixed feelings but I'm glad I didn't stop reading it when I hated the first few volumes lmao.
  • Spent by Alison Bechdel: I was expecting this to be more like her three autobiographical graphic novels, so it was interesting that it was instead, like... a fictionalized fusion of her life + the characters from Dykes to Watch Out For. I'm very glad I'd read Dykes before reading this. It was nice to revisit those characters, esp through the lens of where they started in the early 80s and where they are now, like, now one has a non-binary asexual poly college student kid. NB and ace were no where in the early Dykes because a lot of that wasn't on our radar then, so seeing Bechdel's world expand as ours has is nice. I'm less sure I really grokked all the capitalism stuff, lmao, but still. Interesting book. I've not read anything by Bechdel I didn't like.
  • The Way of the Househusband vol. 8 by Kousuke Oono
  • Haikyu! vol. 34 by Haruichi Furudate
  • Fire Force vol. 6 by Atsushi Ohkubo

3. What will you read next?

Well, I'm on this trip until we get home early Tuesday morning on a red-eye, so I planned books around "trip." After Babel, I've got the three volumes of Lip and Sword by Jin Shisi Chai with me, physically, and I also had scheduled a few Libby holds to come up around now, so I've got Go Luck Yourself by Sara Raasch, Gwen and Art are Not in Love by Lex Croucher, and The Tomb of Dragons by Katherine Addison. So I will presumably read some combo of those, lol. For manga/graphic novels, I didn't bring any physical ones cause they're too short, what's the point of carrying them, but I've got like 10 titles on Libby; Acid Town vol. 6 by Kyugo is due in four days so presumably I'll read at least that, lol. That's my only one due within the next 7 days, tho, so I'm not sure which others I'll go for.

The cover of a book. Stylized text at the top reads: Duck Prints Press presents Scholarly Pursuits. Bottom text reads A Queer Anthology of Cozy Academia Stories. The artwork is of a a red dragon with gold horns, beard, chest, tail, and eyes. The dragon holds a quill as it writes something, unseen, on a wooden counter. It is wearing glasses. It looks at a tiny white mouse, also wearing glasses, sitting on a pile of books and holding an open book. They are surrounded by bookshelves and a bright burning candle. A bat holding a scroll flies over the dragon, and two other bats hang from the counter. The book spines are in the colors of pride flags.

We’re scant weeks from the crowdfunding campaign to fund our next general imprint anthology, Scholarly Pursuits: A Queer Anthology of Cozy Academia Stories! We’re delighted, today, to share our cover art by the unbeatable Liz Lee Illustration!

Digital artwork of a red dragon with golden accents leaning against a counter, with an arch over their head and bookshelves all around them. Beside the dragon is a tiny white mouse, holding books. Both wear glasses. Three bats also are present. The bookcases include books, divination items, jugs, candles, and a skull, and many of the book spines are in pride flag colors. Dark green plants drape down the left side, covering some of the shelves.

Text over a picture of two deer in a red-tinted forest. The text reads: Artist Recruitment Open for an Anthology of Queer Fiction and Artwork Inspired by Folktales.

Once Upon a Time… Scratch that—RIGHT NOW: the artist applications for our newest, folktale-themed anthology are open!

Our Queer Fanworks Inspired By… anthologies take classic public-domain works and give them the queer makeovers they (and we!) deserve. For this, the fourth anthology in the collection, we’re focusing on queerifying folktales and fairy tales. Specifically, we are asking creators to choose a folktale or fairy tale with personal significance, and then make it queer. So bring your personal faves and your inspiration, and fill out an application showing us what you can do and telling us what you’d like to do next!

This is a paid arting opportunity; artists will be asked to complete one full-page (A4/210 mm x 297 mm), full-color piece, and we may have space for some artists to complete more than one page and/or short comics. Base pay is $50 per page, with the potential for raises up to $400 per page depending on our success during the eventual crowdfunding campaign.

Want to learn more?

Applications close on July 15th, so don’t hesitate and join us! Ready to apply?

Duck Prints Press’s monthly “created works round-ups” are our opportunity to spotlight some of the amazing work that people working with us have done that ISN’T linked to their work with Duck Prints Press. We include fanworks, outside publications, and anything else that creators feel like sharing with y’all. Inclusion is voluntary and includes anything that they decided “hey, I want to put this on the created work’s round-up!”

summary: During the Kuja Pirates’ latest journey, Hancock found a really lovely dildo. As she uses it, the hands she imagines coursing over her skin slowly change. From soft fingertips and hard knuckles to soft knuckles and rough fingertips. The voice she hears changes too, from a carefree “Shishishi” laugh to a reverent “My Queen”…

Before she knows it, Boa Hancock is not exactly fantasizing about Monkey D. Luffy anymore.

1. What are you currently reading?

  • What Fresh Hell is This? Perimenopause, Menopause, Other Indignities, and You by Heather Corinna: my Libby loan on this ended with me about 50% through, so I've moved it to paused. I'm actually a little dubious on how helpful I'm finding it but meh. I put a new hold on it and I guess I'll decide if I'm gonna keep going when I get it again.
  • Babel by R. F. Kuang: finally started this and am kinda kicking myself for waiting so long to start it.
  • XXXHolic Omnibus vol. 3 by CLAMP: started this yesterday, not much else to say.
  • 天官赐福 manhua vol. 3 by 墨香铜臭: I've been waking up obnoxiously early this week, which has at least had the positive effect that I've managed to read a chapter of this a day the last few days.

2. What have you recently finished reading?

  • A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine: ended up with decidedly mixed feelings about this. I have the kind of frustration toward it that I usually get toward things I feel were so close to being fantastic but missed in little ways.
  • Kaiju No. 8: Exclusive on the Third Division by Keiji Ando and Naoya Matsumoto: this is a light novel canon-insert between events shown in some of the novel volumes. Ultimately pointless, but I like this 'verse enough that it was nice to get to spend more time with the characters.
  • Ogi's Summer Break vol. 2 by Koikawa: (modern BL, gender nonconforming mc) I reserved judgement on this after volume 1 but now that I'm done with the duology... this was a mess.
  • Is This the Kind of Love I Want? vol. 1 by Kouki: modern BL with an established relationship between a gay man and a "straight" man. I'm always here for characters who are solidly adults. I'm hoping the second vol. wraps things up nicely (I've got a hold on it on Libby).
  • Kaiju No. 8 vol. 13 by Naoya Matsumoto: of course grabbed this as soon as I saw it at the local library and finished it within a few hours.
  • Witch Hat Aterlier vol. 9 by Kamome Shirahama
  • Renegade Girls by Nora Neus: cute historical wlw that I was judging harshly on a few points up until I found out the main characters were both based on real historical figures. So like. It's just history that middle class white women took the mantle that should have belonged to others, sigh.
  • The Science of Ghosts by Lilah Sturges: very interesting ghost story with a wlw trans woman lead that I was enjoying until the end. I seem to have stumbled on a run of "main character has to give up everything they enjoy doing/have poured their passion into for the sake of a partner" stories. This is my third in like two weeks. Ugh.
  • Yona of the Dawn vol. 14 by Mizuho Kusanagi: I'm almost out of volumes the library has (again) and sigh.
  • FANGS vol. 3 by Billy Balibally: (modern vampire BL) there's no volume 4 yet and I take that as a personal attack.
  • Demon Slayer/Kimetsu no Yaiba vol. 18 by Koyoharu Gotouge
  • Blue Exorcist vol. 1 by Kazue Kato: this was recommended to me on Tumblr after I put up a post asking what I should read. I was kinda meh on it, honestly; there are no more volumes of it available from my libraries at this time and I think I'm fine with that.

3. What will you read next?

I'm leaving on a family vacation next Tuesday, which involves flying across the country, so I'll probably get a lot of reading done. I'm debating what to bring, honestly, as lots of books will be heavy but not having anything in print will mean I rely too heavily on my phone and the battery might not last. I'm leaning toward bringing either Lip and Sword or the first couple volumes of Yuwu. For graphic novels, I've got three from the local library I want to finish before we leave (Rainbow vol. 2 and vols 2 and 3 of What did you eat yesterday?). On Libby, I'm decently caught up right now - nothing due in the next week - so idk. Oh, also, I have Go Luck Yourself by Sara Raasch on Libby, with the plan of reading it during the trip, and a couple other novel holds likely to come between now and then. (Yes, I will be bringing about 4x more books than I can possibly read in a week).

Our June 2025 Pride Bundles for Charity sale, selling bundles of short stories and art to raise money for Rainbow Railroad, has officially concluded, and we’ve already made the donation!

Duck Prints Press has donated $225.07 to Rainbow Railroad; the Press also kicked in another $5.63 to cover the processing fee.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who boosted and liked the bundle campaign, and of course to everyone who bought one or more of the bundles! We couldn’t have done this without you.

What follows are screen captures showing our sales and proof of donation, for transparency purposes. The percentages donated for each bundle vary because authors and artists had the option to donate shares of their royalties; some did so, some did not. Which chose to do that impacted the total amount we could donate from each bundle. The Press donated $46.98 of our total share of the proceeds, plus the $5.63 for the fee; the rest of our donation comes from the generosity of the contributing creators. Note: small discrepancies in the dollar amounts in the “Net Sales” column of the first screen cap and the “Gross Sales” row of the third screen cap are caused by currency conversions; the differences were reflected when the total fees were calculated.
A screen capture from Woocommerce's sales analysis backend, showing a chart of sales for three products: Pride Bundle 2025 Explicit Imprint, sold 9 copies for $216.33; Pride Bundle 2025 General Imprint, sold 8 copies for $172.35; and Pride Bundle 2025 Art, sold 5 copies for $63.91

A screen capture from the itch.io sales analytics back-end, showing a chart. Three items are on the chart, showing that the Pride Bundle 2025 Art bundle and Pride Bundle 2025 Explicit imprint bundle had zero sales, and then the Pride Bundle 2025 general imprint bundle had 2 sales worth $48 USD.
A screen capture from a spreadsheet, showing a chart with a bunch of math. It has columns for each bundle, and rows for number of copies sold, gross sales, fees, net sales, Press share, author share, and the total amounts calculated to go to charity. The numbers match those in the previous two charts, with more detail on the break down of the fees and shares to authors and press and charity. For the General Imprint Bundle, total donation is 50% of total sales or $109.62; for the Explicit Imprint bundle, total donation is $103.58 or 48% of the total sales,

HAPPY PRIDE 2025! For Pride this year, we’re changing up our usual rec lists. Instead of doing books with specific identities or themes, we’re focused this time on cover color! Throughout the month of June, we’ll be doing 8 rec lists, each with covers inspired by one of the colors of the original Gilbert Baker Pride Flag. We drew a little additional inspiration from the meaning behind the color and why it was included in the original LGBTQIA+ flag (in this case, violet = spirit), but we prioritized color over meaning. The contributors to this list are: Nina Waters, Dei Walker, Shannon, and Tris Lawrence.

We’d love to make that $200 or more, though, so if you haven’t checked out our bundles yet, now is a great time!
